A good idea, digital distribution rights.

Take a look at this.

I despise RIAA and will support anything that gets the money to the musicians and the music out into the world without getting those RIAA pigs any more money.

I personally think Apple should bypass the label and allow artists to post music directly to the iTMS. Apple keeps, what, $0.30/dl? I think that's what it it. Anyways, this way the artist would get(close to) 70% of the profits from each download. Any small garage band or aspiring singer, that has no chance of ever landing a contract with one of the Big 5, could place their music on iTMS, and wait for an audience to develop.

I have some friends that have a small band, this could be huge to them!

iTMS must not become the breeding ground of subpar music. It should be for Music that should be selling in the thousands.

What I recommend Apple do is created a secondary site for very small Independants and Labels. This site would be just like iTMS but would cater the unsigned artist. I would have so that my Top 5 or 10% of the groups in this section would gain access to iTMS.

What I fear is iTMS holding too many subpar tracks from Bedromm Home Studios. There should be a certain level of quality that is the threshhold for iTMS. CDBaby and other iTMS partners would generally be dealing with this iTMS offshoot first.

there's no reason that they couldn't have a college store or a diy store, it'd be silly to turn away labeless or indi bands especially since there are so many that have pretty decent local followings thru club appearances or their websites.

iTMS should not become an extension of the record business, or use it's model. it has no reason to.

tear down the walls, don't build them back up!

I wouldn't worry about it. Apple would have to design a totally wack interface for this to become a problem.

Think of all the junk and porn that Amazon stocks. When's the last time you felt overwhelmed by anything other than mainstream crap when you were browsing there?

the last thing we need is for Apple to act as a record company. let them run the store. they do that well. let everybody else worry about dealing with the artists.
