Can't Copy File To Firewire Drive

I'm trying to backup my audio file (itunes et. al.) to my external firewire (400) hard drive. Granted it's a large file but there's plenty of room on the firewire drive. I get an error message type 50 and my G4 800mhz says it can't complete the operation. Any ideas?

    i ran into this a few times. my problems were solved by creating a Unix filesystem format. all files copied just fine to that. don't know why though.
