CNet notes that Microsoft is looking into a Music Store offering:

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said his company is exploring ways to develop a music download service similar to Apple Computer's iTunes that would tie into the software giant's multimedia applications.

This is only the latest in a series of potential threats to Apple's iTunes Music Store which is due to come to Windows by year's end.

This is not the first time Microsoft has been cited as a player in the digital music downloads market. In June, the LATimes even reported that Microsoft had been demoing their version of the Music store. A Microsoft solution would certainly make it more challenging for Apple to make inroads on the Windows platform.

look, is it genetically impossible for this little 98 lb. freak (who retired from ceo to become the software "visionary" for MS) to come up with a single, unique, good idea all on his own?!?!? does the little bastard have to own EVERYTHING?!?! what, is he worried his personal fortune will go from 60 billion down to, what, 50 billion in a couple of years??? perish the thought!!!

i can't wait for the day when he actually does run apple and everyone else out of business. then he's gonna really retire, 'cause he won't have ANYone else to take ideas from. maybe then, and only then, will people realize the substandard products he's been using to keep his momentum going for the past 20 years.

Perhaps they should concentrate on this instead.

And a terrible DRM that consumers hopefully won't use.

Unlike what most mac users believe, Apple was not the first to bring legal online music download service to the market.

So MS is not really stealing an idea from Apple.

Were they the first to do it in such a useful, nice no-hassle way though? No subscription, no severe restrictions on usage, etc.

As in many cases, yeah Apple might not have been first to the party...but when they do arrive, it usually makes the wait worthwhile because they'll do it cleaner, snazzier and easier than the others.

I don't know, I'm asking: WAS there an online, "pay as you go and only for what you want" music service out there before Apple? And if there was, was it as slick and well-implemented as Apple's? Did it play nice with your Rio mp3 player?

    First doesn't always = best.

Besides, let's not kid ourselves: was there ANY sort of true, serious "legal online music service" buzz/talk before April? As in many, many cases, Apple comes out, does it better/cooler than everyone else and months later, you hear all the other stories of people following the cue.

Just like with digital music, video, photos. Just like with sleek hardware design. And "wireless Internet for the masses". And bubbly, gel-like eye candy seen everywhere now. And a whole new era of GUI and icon design. And tightly integrated digital media apps.

That's just how it goes. Sorry if some of you don't like - or can accept - that fact.

I'd LOVE to have some sort of time filter thing, go back to 1998 and run a parallel course and take Jobs' return to Apple, the iMac, the iBook, the el capitan tower, Titanium, OS X, the iApps, AirPort, etc. TOTALLY out of the picture...just to see to what degree everything in the computer world would still be beige, boxy and graceless chunks of plastic. And GUI for various devices and websites wouldn't look anything like they do. And there, most likely, wouldn't be this huge surge in "digital lifestyle" stuff in the way of targeted apps working tightly with the OS and one another.

You know, I know it, the entire world knows it.

Except that Buy.com and MS probably hadn't considered it until iTMS was launched.
