Hi I have a powermac MDD and I would like to hook up a PC to it, which will probably be running Windows 2k...

What I want to be able to do is: Without using a hub, is connect the PC to the internet through the mac... All I need to know is how do it in software... Anybody got any ideas?

Any help will be much appreciated.

To mount a windows share from OS X is very easy. From the Finder select Go/Connect to Server. The name of the windows machine should show up. Click once on that. The IP address will appear in the Address field below. Now add /folder where folder is the name of the shared folder you setup on the windows machine. Now click connect. A new dialog appears. Enter your windows User Name and Password, click OK and you should be in. The windows folder will mount on your desktop like a hard drive.

To share from the Mac to Windows is a little more complicated.

I'm copied this from another forum a long time ago. I apologize for not being able to give correct attribution.

-On PC and Mac, make sure the workgroup names are the same. On PC, this means Start->MyComputer->Rightclcik->Properties->Computer Name-> press Change. Should be Workgroup as the workgroupname.

On Mac, Applications:Utilities launch Directory Access, click lock and enter password to admin, then click smb and configure. Make sure name is the same workgroup name as on PC.

-On Mac, System preferences:Sharing Tab. Click on Windows File Sharing

-On PC: Make sure you have at least one folder shared.

-To mount PC share on the Mac:Go menu, Connect to Server. If the PC shows up great, just click it. If not, enter the IP as smb://IP_Adress/sharename. Enter userid and password and you are set

-To mount Mac shares on the PC:Start->My Network Places, Click Add Network Place. Click Next a few times, till you see a Browse button, click browse, expand Entire Network object until you see the Mac name there.

Both the Mac and the PC have to have folders shared inorder to share.

If either computer can't 'see' the other:

    -check cables

    -check workgroup names

    -ensure folders are shared

-pick up XP box and heave it out the Window.

Also, this website covers both topics:

    Mac to PC filesharing

    PC to Mac filesharing

    Hope this helps.

His problem is that he wants to access the wealth of information and porn outside of his Mac, not the info and porn inside. Quite a difference, no?

Drawing on what Gargoyle said, buy a crossover ethernet (Cat-5) cable. Normal Cat-5 cable probably will not fit the bill*, as it is intended to go between computer and a hub/router of some sort, which does the switching for it.

Question: how is the Mac connected to the internet? If it's by modem, you're good to go with the ports onboard. If it's by cable/DSL, you're going to need a PCI ethernet card (and I'm assuming you already have one.) Your PC will also need a PCI ethernet card if it doesn't have an ethernet port already.

I know that this doesn't cover the software front, but you need to make sure you're ready hardware-wise.

*Your QS can do crossover connections using normal patch cable, but I'm not sure if your PC will be able to, or if it will have to. Maybe someone else knows.

Both computers have built in ethernet ports, the mac is connected to dsl via usb modem. I have no router or hub, so the machines will have to link together... I can get the cables needed easily.

Thanks for the help so far...

if the mac is connected to the dsl modem, via usb, then you should have an open ethernet port. Use crossover cable from the mac to the pc. In the system preferences panel, under Sharing, then internet tab. Set the PC to use dhcp and you should be all set.apple support: Sharing Internet

Oh, and on the PC, create a new network location, or edit an existing one. Under the properties panel for the network connection, select the Internet Protocol (tcp/ip) connection and hit Properties. Then select "obtain ip address automatically"..been a long time since I've set up a connection under 2k though, so that may be slightly different...
