Out of interest, which model of PowerBook was it? What's the firmware version of the Superdrive? (Apple System Profiler should be able to tell you: Applications/Utilities).

sorry to hear it. just out of curiosity, how much was it? i just got a superdrive through OWC for my quicksilver, it was only $175, which i thought was pretty good deal. i imagine the ones for the powerbooks are bit more pricey though.

They were obviously charging quite a bit for the labor, as even a slot-loading laptop SuperDrive doesn't cost nearly that much.

    no, apple has tiers...

if they have to get at your mobo or media drive it is tier 2 (i think) which is roughly $800

if they have to get at your screen it is tier 3 and that runs like $1100 or so

if they just have to get at something a little more trivial it is tier 1 and like $400

i have apple care sheets with all of the titles and prices on them... but they are lost in my mess of papers in my room... my powerbook has gone in for repairs on all 3 tiers... sometimes multiple times fortunately they were all covered by applecare and were only gone for a few days (read: 3) at a time... plus my entire casing was replaced

Yeah I was at the $800 tier...unfortunately the way the drive got broken wasn't covered under the AppleCare Warranty...you see, my kid thought the slot was a piggy bank and put coins in it and I didn't realize it until I put a few CD's in there...HA HA HA...and there's no way I can be upset with my 2 yr old...oh well...

I did that to my dad's car when I was 2 or so...I jammed the heating vents full of pennies, so when you turned on the heating it made this hideous grating noise. I was so innocent back then.

You shoulda just left the dead drive in the Powerbook and get a external DVD-R drive, alot cheaper and faster!

Can you actually buy OEM UJ-815 (Super)drives?

That will fit in the PowerBook? (it uses ATA33 for the optical drive, so connectors shouldn't be a problem).

Does the OEM firmware work with Mac OS X/iApps? (If it doesn't then there is an updater to the D0CB firmware that 12" PowerBooks have but it disables DVD-RW burning)
