Networking Original G3 Desktop with Tibook

Hi all. I'm trying to help a friend network his original 1997 (or so) original G3 Desktop with his 1 year old Tibook 667 with no luck. I've turned file sharing on on both machines and the Tibook only sees itself... I've even tried upgrading the G3 to OS 9.2.1, which sped it up a great deal but it didn't seem to help the problem. Any suggestions? The G3 has 288 MB of ram and the Tibook has 768 MB. I'm almost sure I set the Users and Groups part right on the G3... Would I have to set the same thing on the Tibook but under OS 9? I have it set up on my G3 (iBook) and it works fine... but I think that's because I had had it set under OS 9 and it must have carried over to OS X...(???)

Please help me sort out this confusion.

Thanks.

In the network pref pane on the OS X machine, click the AppleTalk tab in the ethernet port config and ensure it is on.

In the AppleTalk control panel on the OS 9 machine, make sure it's on and set to ethernet.

I think it could be the cable... Thanks for replying. ^^

Are they directly connected or are they connected through a router?

If they're directly connected, you have to use an Ethernet Crossover Cable, not a standard Cat 5, 5e or 6 cable. You can get them at your local computer store or Best Buy.

The TiBook doesn't require a crossover cable but the Beige DT does.
