OS X purchase advice: Jaguar now, or wait for Panther?
Greetings folks, I'm new here and this is my first thread.
I'm currently in the process of upgrading my G3 iMac 450's RAM so that I can move from OS 9 to OS X (finally!). I'm curious as to what you all recommend: purchase the readily available Jaguar, or sit tight and wait for the upcoming Panther? Any compelling reasons either way?
Thanks.

Panther isn't due until the end of the year -- and that likely means sometime in December. Maybe, maybe they'll try to have Panther ready-to-go about a month before Christmas to sell along with new computers.
So it'll likely be around four months -- the rest of August, all of September and October, most or all of November, and perhaps part of December -- before you can get Panther.
Simple math then: At $129, is it worth it to you to have Jaguar for the next four months at a cost of about $35/month? If Panther is delayed for any reason beyond December, you'll also have a much better OS to tide you over until it arrives.

All signs point to you being wrong.
From the article:
With little to no visual or feature alterations made in this latest build of Panther, it appears that the development process is starting to wind down. Panther was originally slated for a September release, and from the looks of the latest builds, should hit that target.
Do you seriously think that Apple is going to keep Panther developer only for nearly six months?
