I am a newbie!

Greetings,

Well I finally made the switch! I have always used a PC. I will still have to for work but no longer at home. I recently purchased a new 12inch Powerbook with the Superdrive. I love it and use it constantly. I really have no clue about Mac's and would love some advice on software and or Freeware. I have liked the 12inch Powerbook so much I traded one of my many PC notebooks for a 15inch G4 500MHz Powerbook so my wife can learn it. As I said before, any suggestions would be great! the only things I have added to the 12 inch powerbook is an addtional 512 meg of RAM and MS Office X.

    PowerBook, that is.

Now, if you name any type of software you would like (web browser, video editing program, word processor, etc.), we will give you the best one for Mac? er, well? not actually give the software to you, but we will name it.

And then you too can have 100 different visual styles of the same recycled code used to create desktop calendars, desktop clocks, little dancing chickens and other animals that run around on your screen!

    Well,

I will let you know what free/share ware I like.

-If you don't have PhotoShop get GraphicConverter

-mPlayer and VLC (for movies that don't play in Quicktime)

    -TinkerTool

-Play with the Terminal and visit http://www.macosxhints.com/

crap, that's all I have at the moment.

    {edit: ditch IE and get Safari, Camino, Mozilla.}

Yeah, Safari is the first thing you should download, and Poisoned, the P2P client (Don't ban me, Mods! I'm suggesting this software assuming that GreggWSmith has good moral values!), and Carbon Copy Cloner are all worthwhile free programs. I'd also like to add Proteus, the Universal messenger. Although Proteus isn't freeware, you can use the full version before you decide to pay a minumum donation of $20. You'll be paying this donation faster than you can imagine.

Congradulation on the beginning of your orgas- uh, I hope you enjoy your Mac.

    Welcome along!

Shareware? I like to use Vanity Dockling to see how long it is since I rebooted. Moon Menu is a nice thing to have If you like that sort of thing. If you have a bluetooth Sony Ericcson get Ericcson Clicker

    For mac-centric websites I like

    Joy Of Tech

    AppleTurns

    and of course AppleInsider

Welcome to the community, hope you enjoy your mac

I suggest, in addition to Internet Explorer and Safari, that you get Omniweb, Camino, Mozilla, Firebird, Opera, iCab, Netscape and any other web browser I may be unaware of, if nine isn't enough.

Desktastic, Cat-in-the-Dock, CandyBar and SpeedDownload are good to have, too.
