Possible future of Airport Base Station
SHARP has just released a new device in Japan which I thought was cool. Should the Airport Base Station become more like this?(Japanese-language only): http://www.sharp.co.jp/pserver/
It is a 802.11b base station which has the functionality of TIVO, and a File/Web Server. You can record/playback shows on it's 120GB hard disk, back up your hard drive, serve web pages, and transfer video programs to your computer in MPEG-4 or access them from outside through the web. Connected via 802.11b, of course. The cost is approximately a US$1000.00.
It may kill .Mac but I like this solution better.

I'd have to get a chance to play with a gadget like that to figure out how good it really was. The concept is interesting, but it's trying to wear so many hats that a half-assed implementation could easily cripple it.
However, the idea of a 'net built from the bottom up, rather than the top down, is appealing to me on many levels, and this appliance is a step in that direction.
