Pills, serum, whatever. The point is marijuana will be legal in private anyway.

This is what I would like to see in California. Ban smoking from public areas completely, doesn't matter if it's tobacco or marijuana. Make it legal to smoke marijuana on private property. Tax the hell out of tobacco, and marijuana sales. Give the gravestly ill 'cancer patients' THC pills they can munch on.
first, thc isn't just good for cancer, it can also help with glaucoma, aids/hiv, and people with under-eating disorders.
i dont understand why people would want to ban public smoking. i mean, i can understand how you don't want it in restaurants, bars or whatever (i dont agree with the idea, but i understand it). but i think that i should have the right to do what i want to myself so long as i dont hurt anyone else; and you cant tell me that takin a smoke outside of my office is hurting anyone, when no one (but smokers) is within 20ft of me. i also dont like the idea of taxing 'the hell' out of these things either. phillip morris was a terrible company that did terrible things, in particular lying about the effects of nicotine and tobacco, and for that i think they should be punished. but otherwise, to me, its like the government is deciding which vices are approved, and which aren't; and i dont like the govt forcing me through taxes to pick a certain vice. if smoking [tobacco or pot] is so terrible, then show me lots of evidence, and then i can make a reasonable decision. i've heard lots of shit about it, i know its bad for me, i decided to smoke anyway, and who the fvck is govt to tell me i shouldn't?

I don't notice it as much in SF, but I can definitely smell more than a whiff of smoke walking down sidewalks in places like Berkeley and Hollywood. Your smoke does hurt people. I remember 5 years ago somebody was smoking outside his dorm and I saw a girl drop to the floor with a respiratory ailment of some kind. When I wait for my ride at the AirPort, I like standing outside of the Arrivals terminal, but lots of smokers hang out there and make my eyes red.
You can bring in the car exhaust argument all you like. The industry should be striving harder to cut down on that too. ...But at least the combustion engine actually does something.
and you cant tell me that takin a smoke outside of my office is hurting anyone, when no one (but smokers) is within 20ft of me.
That's because everyone who doesn't smoke vacated your location after you showed up.
i also dont like the idea of taxing 'the hell' out of these things either. phillip morris was a terrible company that did terrible things, in particular lying about the effects of nicotine and tobacco, and for that i think they should be punished.
PM and RJR lied decades ago. Practically everyone effected by their lies is dead now. These days every other commercial is a Philip-Morris commercial bashing itself. IMO, they've paid their dues. I'd rather see actual smokers actually STOP smoking rather than just making Philip-Morris pay dying smokers record settlements. Like you said, it's your right to smoke...in private. It's Philip-Morris's right to sell y ou what you want too.
but otherwise, to me, its like the government is deciding which vices are approved, and which aren't; and i dont like the govt forcing me through taxes to pick a certain vice. if smoking [tobacco or pot] is so terrible, then show me lots of evidence, and then i can make a reasonable decision.
It's not terrible as long as it only affects the person who chooses to smoke.
i've heard lots of shit about it, i know its bad for me, i decided to smoke anyway, and who the fvck is govt to tell me i shouldn't?
You should, in your house. In your friend's house. In a cigar room.

Anyone see the papparazzi exposé where they were waiting for someone like Nicole Kidman, and they surprisingly discovered Gary Coleman working as a washed out security guard? And this guy is running for governor? I guess it's to give Arnie more credibility, or something.
Or it's just Gary Coleman being Gary Coleman. Frankly I'm surprised Corey Feldman's not running. I could put my name on the ballot as long as I have the 65 signatories behind me and $3500.

Unfortunately growing tobacco is one of the worst things a farmer can do to the planet. The plant needs more chemicals than any food product in order to grow, and it leaves the soil almost as useless as sand when it's done. So growing tobacco destroys the land and the watertable which indirectly effects everyone.

I'll have to disagree, it directly affects everyone. If the enviromental hazard is true. Plus there is the percentage of deaths from cancer and respitory ailments caused by second hand smoke.
Yes, I believe in personal freedom and I am a smoker, something I regret starting. But sometimes humanity does need a little protection from itself. Ah, screw it, if we can't be smart enough to stop something that is bad for us perhaps we deserve to be wiped off the planet, including victims of second hand, they've probably done something to fvch over the planet as well.

i find that hard to believe. tobacco has been one of the hugest crops this country and its predecessors have grown for hundreds of years, and the carolinas are hardly a desert. but are you really trying to say that i shouldn't smoke in public because the shit i'm smokin when grown hurts the environment? ( damned hippies and their environmentalism )

well, smelling it aint the same as getting hurt by it. its not like it pains most people. some people enjoy the smell of second hand smoke. sure, there's that one girl you saw with a respiratory problem. its sad and unfortunate she got hurt by it, and that her health issue got bad enough for to be damaged to standing outside with smokers. if her lungs were so bad, maybe she should've avoided the smokers. cases like that are hardly common.
i dont think we (smokers) should be forced off the streets and into private residences. in a free country people should be allowed to live reasonably, and i think its reasonable for those who dont like smoke to walk away from it. in ny, there are plenty of bums and vagrants who have a powerfully bad stank to them, we tend to walk away from them. and theres plenty of space outside an airport to stand. i dont like how smokers are being pushed away from our smoking areas. i cant even light up in most bars in ny anymore, and thats just wrong.

i don't understand why people smoke. furthermore why can't you people smoke at least 50 feet from the entrance of a building. you are VERY lazy(!) that you can't walk further away so we have to breathe your crap
what exactly is the benefit?

in front of my office building, directly outside the doors is where they put ash trays. you wouldn't want me to litter would you? i'm not opposed to smoking further away, but no one seems to mind; the only people who hang out there for any amount of time are smokers. clean lungs tend to walk by, and aren't very obviously annoyed by it. anyway i dont tend to hang out too often, anyway. i usually finish a cigarette as I approach the building, or light one and walk away.
as for smoking, no, i haven't got a good reason. i mean, besides the fact that i enjoy it and it makes me feel good. after (or during) a frustrating day of work, a few cigarettes can put me in the right head. they also taste really nice with a few pints. that, and its tough to stop.

smoking, like much in life, doesn't have an inherent benefit. do board games? beer? porn? its something that i do, i like, and i dont want others to try and make me stop.
the reason i smoke things other than tobacco, is for their inibriating effects, and often the europhoria associated with these effects.

It is smokers with that mentality that are a blemish on society. You don't give a shit that it disturbs other people. Second hand smoke causes cancer! It DOES hurt other people by just "smelling it" as you put it.
So that girl with the respiratory illness should have went out of her way to avoid something someone else was doing? How is that fair? How about the smokers respecting other people's rights to not want to breath that crap?
Eugene is right. I'd rather it be totally illegal but I'd vote for his proposal because it makes the most sense. Keep that trash to yourself.
thread officially derailed

fvck society. i dont believe that second hand smoke causes cancer, and haven't seen much evidence to show that it does. sure, smokers should be a bit more considerate. the situation as i understand it from Eugene, was that this girl was talking/hanging out with these smokers. If it was causing her so much discomfort, I don't think the smokers are completely to blame. if she wasn't hanging out with them, but was close enough to be affected by the smoke, she could've signalled them that it was affecting her. If they came up to her, and just decided to make a cloud, or ignored obvious sign of distress, then they'd be in the wrong. When someone asks me not to smoke, I often oblige, or I go somewhere that I can.

the idea of smoking being illegal disgusts me. it's one thing for the government to take nonsmokers into consideration, and make accomodations for you; but to restrict a smoker's right to smoke is abhorrent. this is not a place the government should have any say in.

If the government is willing to give up all of that handy tax revenue from tobacco, then they can deem it illegal.

Ok, than I'm asking you not to smoke....ever. Will you oblige?
Seriously man, don't you care about your health at all? Are you even considering to quit?
