Explain Silicon Valley

I have heard the name and it being mentioned alot of times. I have a notion of what it may be but i have never had the time to reasearch where the name came from.

    Silicon --> element used in making computer chips.

    Valley --> form of geography.

    The actual place, in case you were wondering, is the Santa Clara Valley, on the Southern tip of San Francisco Bay in Northern California.
