We bought a 15" 700 imac about a year and a half ago. Our family needs a new computer. My plan is to give the imac to the kids and buy a new computer for myself and my wife to use. I'm thinking of a new imac or maybe a 12" pbook. I'm hoping to keep the price to about $1500. Rumor has it . . . new powerbooks next week and upgraded imac soon?? What buying advice would you give . . . we use the computer for home use . . . usual stuff. Wireless networking would be a bonus. What are the new powerbooks going to be like . . . the new imacs . . . what do you think?

Thanks for your thoughts and help.

iMacs are fairly recent, though I wouldn't reject the possibility an update is in the wings for September. For the family I would go for an iMac, more bang for your buck, and go for the 17" screen if you can afford it...without a doubt one of the best and most gorgeous displays out there. Also, if you have a printer, scanner, digital camera, etc...it would be better to leave them plugged into an iMac as opposed to a Powerbook that you would have to plug and unplug everytime you move it. Where in Wisconsin are you from?

Well, MacRumors created a Buyer's Guide which shows past product release dates and the likelihood of updates. Just so you know, both Powerbooks (last updated in November for 15", January for 12" and 17") and iMacs (last updated in February) are the farthest into their product cycle.

What about the eMac? Sure, it doesn't have the coolness factor with the monitor, and I don't care for the screen too much, but it is a lot cheaper.

Actually, forget the eMac. It's loud. I don't know about the iMac, but it has to be quieter than the eMac(keep in mind that I have never heard an iMac, except in the Apple Store, where there are so many people that it becomes impossible to tell the sound level of the different computers apart).
