well, why aren't you using osx? classic is dead. has been for like a year or something.
there are a number of options for osx (and i don't know which have alternatives in os9). you can look for vlc, and mplayer. those are what i'd use on osx (even before i'd try qt). you can also go to divx.com (maybe .org or .net, or .something), and dl divx add-ins for qt; i'm about 90% sure that they have a os9 version. assuming that divx/xvid is the problem with quicktime.

mplayer and vlc both use ffmpeg for video decoding. it's os x only.
Version 5.0.7 of the DivX Codec for Mac works with OS 9 I think, and it's the second version to get the audio right. Before 5.0.6, you had to run a movie through a "doctoring" program in order to hear the audio correctly in QuickTime, although failing to doctor the audio still allowed you to see the video.
