The cost of upgrading

So, here's the deal. Last year I bought a Powerbook. It was in early/mid June. OSX was useless, it always crashed. So I ran the PB mostly in system 9. Along comes September and they release 10.2. I'm told it's the bomb, works great, doesn't crash. But to actually get a copy for what I consider a "new" purchase I have to buy the freakin' thing for $129. This is just not right. And I won't buy a G5 until they offer it with 10.3.

Unlike some folks, I don't have another 130 bucks to help "support" Apple. Don't get me wrong, Apple's a great company, but I really think I'd rather support an NPF of my choice.

They should offer free upgrades for a year, not 30 days. Just like they should offer a subscription to .mac for a year if you buy a new box. These are really tools that help the system run better, and in the case of the OS, not so much an option as a requirement.

10.1 didn't crash for me a lot...unless you're talking about 10.0 that always crashed. Personally, I think Jaguar was worth the $130 on it. Panther will be too, even if you don't use the glaring things they show. There will be a lot of little improvements, along with the big ones you'll use (Finder, Mail, etc.), so it might pay off in the end. It's simple: If you don't think a system upgrade is worth the cost, skip it and wait for the next one. There are people who stayed in 10.1 while the rest of us were in 10.2. I'm assuming it can, and will, be done again. I think I'll go buy Panther, though, because it seems worth it.

Yeah, the price is a little on the high side. But I don't think they'll be lowering it. They should a *little*, maybe a flat $100 or a little less. But oh well, that's the way it works down at 1 Infinite Loop.

Step 1 - Obtain Coffee Can

Step 2 - Drop .37 (or more) cents into it each day

Step 3 - Wait 1 year and then buy the latest build of OS X

Not having to hear people whine about not being able to afford OS X - priceless.

That would be an overfilled coffee cup.

Not everybody will be content or happy with something, and some people will complain. It's understandable.

Is that 0.37 cents per day meaning weekdays only or does that include weekends, 'cause I don't have no money on the weekends 'cause momma don't give me no lunch money on the weekends

Well, it seems you missed the point. It also seems you might want to try a decaff. What I was trying to say was that Apple should offer a FREE upgrade to people who buy their product, within a reasonable amount of time. My suggestion is a year, although even six months would be better then the 30 days they offer.

Yeah..possibly 3-6 months would be a good deal. I'm not getting a new computer anytime soon, so it doesn't concern me, therefore I can't say much about it.

The 'mad men' were a bit over the top I admit but the fact is...

Apple is had to try and find new sources for revenue... while at one time they charged a HUGE premium for their machines but gave away the OS they have learned that just wasn't working.. They have come a long way from those HUGE hardware premiums (but some still argue they need to lower prices still) well they still need to pay the folks who write all the software... the OS the iApps the pay for apps etc...

People can't have it both ways...

Apple had to morph from a hardware company to a software and services company... Like it or not MS had the right idea... no money in hardware software is where the profits come from...

Apple now sells cheaper hardware and makes profits from:

    - OS Sales

    - FileMaker

    - ProApps (quite a few now)

    - HomeApps (starting to grow this area too)

Yea it's easy to say but hey I just purchased a brand new machine 2 months ago, they should give me a break send me a free upgrade but the fact is, they can't and IMHO they shouldn't...

Apple had to draw the line and stick to their decision and not be wishy-washy about it....

Yea maybe they shoulda picked 3 months instead of 1 but they made that decision and now they really should stick to it.

.. Weekends too but on the weekends you have time to look under the couch cushions and in the ashtrays in your folks car... Off-season coat pockets is another great place to look as well as the laundry room... Blush, can you tell I grew up in the 70-80s and was totally addicted to video games...

    Quarters... quarters.. gimme quarters...

I wish I just had half of those quarters back...
