Little know fact about the new G5s

The new G5s use PowerBook like processor speed throttling. When the CPU load drops, the processor frequency drops to 1.3GHz. At that speed, according to Apple, a fan is not even needed. This has no impact on performance as the processor will go back to 2GHz in mid-instruction stream and without context switches if the CPU load increases.

This means that if Apple wanted to put a 1.3GHz G5 into a PowerBook/iMac today, they probably could.

it also does this when the clear plastic side of the machine is off.

I also think people have very high hopes to see the G5 in an iMac ANYTIME soon... I have no idea where people are getting this from but I just don`t see it happening. It will stay G4 until the G6.. or until close to the G6 as it did with G3 to G4..

Does it really matter? It's still interesting.

Besides, he did float the idea of the G5 making it into the iMacs using this sort of technology.

Correction: A fan is not needed, with the massive heat sinks of the desktop G5s. Think you could shoehorn a couple of pounds of aluminum and/or copper into a laptop and still have something portable and light weight?

Such as the aluminum body? I believe this is what is already done with the TiBooks.

Why doesn't Apple put a layer of insulation between the bottom shell of the laptop and the electronics? Would this interfere with correct dissipation?

My guess is that they intended for the metallic body to act as a heat sink. Placing a layer of insulation on the bottom would save the users lap, but fry the electronics.

I'd like to see a quote from an Apple tech document or something that confirms this 'fact,' thank you very much.

It would be insane to wait until G6. See ThinkSecret thread on Future Hardware for more.

it would make much more sense to have nine fans mounted

on the bottom of a g5 powerbook..

this way the g5 could hover over any flat surface

    & make typing really easy..

    g5 powerbook ....it blows

The Power Mac G5?s built-in handles will come in handy the day you need to move all your stuff into that corner office you?ve always had your eye on.
