Remote softwareupdate scripting??

Has anyone looked at producing a script package that crawls the network via ssh and runs command line softwareupdate? I imagine having an IP list and probably an update control list. It would probably need to confirm nobody is logged in first so a restart would have no impact. I was thinking of using an ssh key manager on each client machine to improve the security of the connection and eliminate the need for the password appearing in clear text in the scripts.
