AirPort Extreme Base Station is flaky...

Alright, Amorph, I should have listened to you. Just bought an AEBS, and it's a bit... touched. Well, more like I have to touch it a couple times a day to restart the flippin' thing. It goes off into la-la land and forgets it should be routing packets. :P

Any ideas? Further reports? Possible fixes?

Just call Apple and whine mightily?

Flog it on eBay and get another brand of 802.11g base station. Pocket the difference, marvel at the extra features.

Amorph's anecdote was that he'd seen a couple of flaky ones. Well, I got one.

Cheap one, no modem. Purchased a week ago.

I agree with l337 slx0r or whatever his name is... other companies have better 802.11g base stations that cost less. They just don't look as cool.

After purchasing two AEBS and being continuously frustrated by their setup and performance in a 2 Mac & 2 PC network I went out & purchased a Netgear WGR614 802.11g router.

All four computers immediately recognized the Netgear router, setup was much easier than the AEBS, range is much better than the Airport. I was having interference problems with the Airport Base Station but non with the Netgear in the same exact place.

Here's the kicker, after rebate the Netgear cost me $67.95!

Even purchasing a wireless print server (which would allow placement of the printer away from the AEBS)comes in less than the cost of the Airport in total.

Oh, and did I mention how small & cool the Netgear router is? Matches a G5 mutch better than the Airport Base Station.

I love most Apple products but Apple has dropped the ball with this one.

Hmm...I hadn't ever seen this brought up before with the older 802.11b Snow base stations, but it was a consistent problem with the one I had. I tried using it in my dorm room (since I had to use a short proprietary cable to get online, I figured I'd just go wireless), but it got to be much nonsense. I got a cheap 10/100 switch and a lot of Cat5 cable and didn't think about doing the wireless network thing again. But with hearing about this deal that other-branded wireless routers are working out more simply, without complications, I might reconsider...
