Robbed!
They stole my Cube.
Well, it wasn't MY cube, but I was sure to get it after I graduated because I'm the only mac user in the lab... Damn thieves. It was the original 450mhz G4, 20 gig HD and 384 megs of RAM. I don't know what else they took. My prof told me they left all the cables and stuff, so if you see a Cube pop up on eBay without anything but the Cube itself, lemme know.... Damn bastards.
Luckily I hadn't started collecting data yet, otherwise I'd be SCREWED.
It's a sad day. Now I've got to figure out what I want to replace it with.

We're almost entirely MS but I arranged with my prof to buy the Cube as a server. It's been running flawlessly for 3 years now. Too bad it's gone. But I think I may be able to get a G5 depending on how much money the insurance company gives us.
I assume you reported it to the police? (I assume the insurance company requires that) Many people don't bother to, but it does help at least let the cops paint a picture of a crime pattern for a neighborhood. And in better heighborhoods, the cops actually do track stuff down from time to time.
Also let your ISP know, they could help catch the crook if they get online via your modem/account.
I wonder, does any of the OS send out machine identifiable information? Does Software Update send the Mac's serial number to Apple? Be nice to catch them somehow.
But you want a new G5 anyway.

If you had any passwords on that Mac, especially website passowrds, like banking sites, you'd better go and notify the companies involved, and change all your passwords, even on forums.

Fortunately, I never used that computer for personal stuff. I was gone all last year, but I was down once to format the HD and install Jag, so it's pretty fresh. I'll need to make sure my mySQL database passwords are changed, but I can't think of what else there is. Even that won't be much of a problem because I can't figure out how one could get the password to be displayed in the clear.
The computer was housed on campus in my advisor's office off all places. He and his secretaries have taken care of all the police stuff. I'm going over tomorrow to find out how much I can spend. They didn't take the Studio display (17" CRT - it would have been too heavy, I guess), so all the money can go into a computer. I wonder how long it'll be before a G5 could get here...
Heres the only thing that I found. New user, and could have upgraded the ram. Just a guess, don't know if the one that was stolen

Man, that really sucks! I'll surf ebay and keep checking for ya.
Thanks. I'm in Georgia, so that might help narrow it down. Of course, if the jerk was smart, he'd list it being some where else. AFAIK, the keyboard and mouse were left. I'll know more tomorrow when I go over there to see what's left.
The sad thing is, even if I get a G5 out of it, I really wanted the Cube. I was pretty sure the computer would be surplused at the end of the year because no one else is a Mac person in my lab (so I'd be able to get it before sending it off the the unclaimed equipment department). If we get a new one now, I'm not sure that it'll happen.

Yay me! We're getting a G5 to replace it! It's on order right now. It's only the 1.6ghz version, but that's upgrading from a 450mhz G4. I bumped the ram to 512 (why isn't that standard on the pro-machines??) and threw in keynote with the PO so I can use it for my presentations. Took out the superdrive so that that the cost would be covered by insurance. It should be here next week.
Looks like there is a happy ending.
