I am waiting for a new 15 in powerbook, and hopefully take advantage of the buy a bundle get a bundle thing. Anybody care to share what theyll be using for school.
15 ALbook... if the damn thing ever comes out... untill then it is the good o' 68k mac for me. Well I also use the PC I built about a year ago... and my dad's iMac.
I had the most amazing feeling of pride today at my own campus (U. Houston). Our res. halls are requiring EVERYONE to bring in their CPU or laptop for "virus checks" since the IT morons can't figure out how to filter our university's central connection (it's Blaster and Sobig, of course). I knew that it was of no consequence for my silver baby, but I brought it in anyway just to see what they'd do.
I get into the main lobby where they have everybody lined up, and see all these nasty beige towers and half-baked HP colored plastic monstrosities, and NO MACS anywhere!! I was the only person in the entire room with an Apple, and I could tell. I mean, you know how to spot them ("Macdar" I suppose). So I get to the table where they're checking laptops. And the girl opens up my PowerBook and says, "This is the coolest computer I've ever seen." She tries to put the generic windows "fixitall" cd in the drive, and, of course, OS X's not going to see it. I tell them that, and then go around to my baby and pull up Virex to show them that the definitions are up-to-date and that no viruses were found on the last full-fledged scan/repair I did.
They say, "Oh, you're fine then!!" I knew, but to keep the waters calm had to proceed with the bureaucracy (to keep my internet access, which has the most AMAZING upstream speed). Oh, to be a magnanimous Macintosh user.
I'm starting on the 22nd September, and i'll be bringing along my brand spanking new PowerBook 12".
I had the whole debate on buy or wait just before the WWDC, but then after nothing happened I decided I wanted time with the computer before I went to went ahead and bought it (with edu discount).
Nemesis: saw your thread on bringing a mac to do Comp Sci, I'm also starting my first year and am going to see how the first few weeks go. If I find I need a x86 (which I think I will, if only to broaden my experience of operating systems, first thing I'd do would be install Linux) i'll pick up a really cheap one, i've seen second hand P2's for £75 (sorry don't know how much that is in $).
For the record I may be proved wrong shortly but I don't think PowerBooks will hit G5 until at least early next year and if you need a mac now get it now, they'll always be a better one round the corner anyway.

Hey, it is prettier than Win2k. It is also much stabler than Win2k. It is also less open to attack than Win2k. Unfortunately, it is still XP XP is definitely the best windows yet, but in the end it is just windows. So on one hand, no I don't like it. I miss seeing background pictures. On the other hand, I like it because it is better than what came before. Xp is a mixed bag.
All points lead to further neglect of the PowerBook line. Just do this: get an entry-level iBook and a G5 ($1599 with EDU discount and lack of SuperDrive). Now you have power AND mobility, and you don't have to worry about getting the shaft.

I've not used XP for more than 5 minutes, I did put up with Win 98 for four years at school though... the amount of times I had to help people out.

98 is bad too. I think it is really funny how MS tries to make XP all colorful and stuff and it just somes out gay looking and cartoonish. I know you can set it back to 98 style but thats ugly. So you have two option for the windows GUI......fruity or dull.
Just got a leaflet from my uni. This year they have a partnership with IBM (last year it was Toshiba). The only computers they'll give support for are IBM laptops. Those are all they sell in their store too.
Apparently, the minimum requirements for connecting to the network include a Pentium processor, too. Erm, riiiiiiiiight

Alas, it means spending nearly half of my student loan, but I'm afraid my poor Pismo isn't going to last much longer.
I start uni on the 28th September, so I'm hoping for an update at Paris.
