Actually, this article over at osOpinion seems to believe it will be a high speed wireless version of Firewire, though his description actually of the Firewire protocol over the Airport protocol (802.11e).
"Gigawire" is owned by apple inc. and is listed in the trademarks database together with the description of s.th. wireless technology!! that is a fact... though i can't get more infos out of this description

I believe the update to Apple's current implementation of Airport mainly was a security update. I think it improved the level of encryption, allowed for AOL connections and some other minor improvements. This was not yet a move to a different, faster version of the 802.11 protocol.
