Retail Radeon 9800 Pro in a G5?

I looked at ATI's website and it says you need a power connector off the powersupply and connect it to the 9800.

What do you do in a G5? There are no connectors?

Is the card designed to get power off the pro slot in the G5?

Inquiring minds need to know!

Really? You may want to check again.

msantti: Could you tap power from the CD drive? I think that has a normal power connector.

For the moment people can BTO their mac with the radeon 9800 : the market for retail radeon 9800 pro for G5 is extremely small (less than 1000 peoples).

When new video cards will be released, like the R400 core, more G5 owners will be interested by upgrading their towers : the size of the market will be greater, and ATI will offer something.

Well, slapping a Radeon 9800 Pro in a G4 is almost pointless due to its beyond poor bandwidth.

I am just trying to figure out how you would get external power to the Radeon in a G5. The optical drive is the only thing using a molex power connector.

Oh man, I must have been drinking too much last night & misread the original question.

Sorry, in my PC the 9800Pro is connected to the power supply.

I am confused about this topic, yet I have a similar question:

I want a 1.6 G5 NOW, but I also want the 9800 video card. I dont want to wait for Apple to BTO it. Can I order the G5, and ad the 9800 (8x) myself later?

I know there is a retail 9800, but its only 4x. The BTO model is 8x. Can I get the 8x for the 1.6 G5 later? From Apple maybe?

My monitor is a 19" flat LCD, but has a 15 pin standard connector (no ADC, DVI, etc)

My question on this matter is it seems the retail 9800 Pro needs an external power connection off the power supply like the PC version does.

It seems like the BTO version is designed to use the AGP Pro slot where that slot gives you extra power.

I might be wrong but I think thats what it does.

Where would you get external wower from on a G5 except maybe running a "y" adapter off the power lead going to the optical drive and that would be a bit of a reach even if you could do it.

I have a good friend at a local Apple certified VAR here in town. He said that there will be a internal part number soon for the 9800, and he can probably get one for me that way. He also noticed that there currently isn't a part number (CTO) for the ATU 9800, other than BTO. He thinks that the ATI 9800 BTO may really slow down a G5 order, due to a lack of 9800's. He also said that the 9800 will most likely become a accessory/add-on later on the Apple store, once the G5s start to ship and customers start contemplating other video/game options. He guesses around Thanksgiving. Just in time for DOOM3.

My decision: Buy a stock 1.6 now and add the 9800 later, and probably sell the nVidia5200 card to a pal or on eBay. Afterall, the 5200 card isn't total crap, right? Considering I still have a ATI 7500 (32 MB)...

If I cant get a ATI 9800 later I am going to freaking kill Steve Jobs. What? Doesn't Apple WANT my $400???

I am getting frame rates of 60 to 100 FPS at a resolution of 1680x1050 with graphics optioned maxxed out in Nascar Racing Season 2003.

    Thats on a G5 1.6, FX5200 video, and 1.25 GB ram.

Yes, I did upgrade the ram. Even an idiot (well, I hope) would tell you that 256 MB ram is inadequate.

FYI Carmack delayed D3 until Feb 2004.

I agree... mostly. I'm getting a BTO with a 9600 just so it'll last me longer and I won't be annoyed by the weakness of the 5200 as quickly.
