At least the possibility of having 8gb of ram goes a long way to at least delaying it.

I mean when the 3gig G5 is released and you have lets say 2gig's of ram in your dual 2gig G5, just pop in another 2 gig's or more and you already getting closer to the performance of the 3gig.

More RAM does not increase performance, what it does is reducing the performance-loss of having an inadequate amount of RAM.

This statement should not be interpret literally. It just illustrates my point. Try and understand

There's no stopping you from putting 4 gigs of RAM in the 3GHz one, so I don't really see your point.

Well, by the time the 3.0 GHz G5s are out, there will be RAM that comes in 2 GB DIMMS, which means the G5 will then have 16 GB of RAM.

The existing G5 can very well handle 16GB's of RAM. It's saying 8 because Apple does not sell 2GB sticks themselves, and such sticks are very rare and expensive too.

Just funny, people start to discuss obsoleteness and ungrading of the Dual G5 before anyone even got his or her hands on one of the machines.

Anyone feeling their Dual G5 with 2GB RAM to be obsolete, just send it to me!

from the front page of pricewatch.com:

    $1199 - PC3200 DDR 2GB

    $163 - PC3200 DDR 1GB

    wow, what a price difference.

I wouldn't trust a "house brand" 2GB DIMM, and those $163 "1GB" DIMMs on pricewatch are actually 1GB kits which have two 512MB DIMMS.

I've been looking around since the WWDC keynote and I haven't found a single 1GB DIMM for sale from anyone other than Apple. Does Apple have an exclusive contract somewhere? Anyone have a line on 1GB DIMMs?

Hynix, Micron, and Elpida claim to have 1GB PC3200 DIMMS, but I haven't seen them for sale anywhere either. Intel also hasn't validated any 1GB PC3200 DIMMS with any of their motherboards. Maybe Apple has bought the entire world's production capacity.

The norwegian online-store komplett.no has 1GB-sticks of RAM in stock, actually. They sell for ~3000NOK, compared to ~1000NOK per 512MB-sticks, and ~12000NOK per 2GB-stick. The 2GB sticks are not in stock, but has to be ordered, something that's scheduled to take 5 days.

I would think that the G5 is obsolete compared to the next processor design IBM is coming out with. There are already working on the 980. But the G5 isn't obsolete to the current line of computer systems both intel, amd, and the powermac line. It's probably the most advanced for a consumer desktop.
