How about a PM when you selectively censor certain people?

Powerdoc totally removed a post I made. Not deleted it from the thread, but erased it and left the word "removed."

I know folks around here are human, are donating their time, apply the rules in a very imperfect manner, etc. however could I at least get a PM to know that something I wrote is gone or changed with at least a rational?

I know my post at BR was a pretty hard dig, but he has a thick skin.

Meanwhile I have hard several posts directed at mean that were basically cursing rants totally devoid of content. Most folks go back and say "needless personal attack removed" by themselves. But others just sit there (yes I reported them) and have nothing done that were much worse than my one line.

Again I would at least appreciate a PM saying that it was changed. Since the words are after my name and represent me, I at least have the right to know they were changed.

Nick

Might I suggest just spending less time in AppleOutsider altogether? That place is like walking into a gas chamber with no mask on. We can only stomach going in there to clean crap up for so long, then we have to go puke our brains out for a few hours. We also can't police everybody all the time. But in regards to letting people know, we shouldn't even have to be editing posts to remove that content in the first place.. but if we take time to notify you guys when we do, that's time we don't have to go remove more of the crap that gets posted in AO.

    On a related note...

The board is only as good as the members. Remember, AO is such a hell hole because the members have chosen to make it that way. We only have so much control... and we either get accused of not doing enough or doing too much, and we can never win. Individual members can make a difference by keeping their own posts clean, and not contributing to a mud slinging thread. If enough people start doing this, the quality will improve, so yes, one person can make a difference in the end. So we, the mods/admins, have less power over the quality of the forum than you guys do, so it's up to you to make a difference. Responsibility sucks, eh?

when you are ignoring someone, you can't get a pm from that person.

and when you are a mod / admin, you should have no one in your ignore list.

that's all that matters in the vB.

whenever i need to censor someone, i either know they are back in the thread in the next hour, or i pm (when breaking the rules the first times) that they are breaking e.g. the warez policy or the personal attacks. and also saying anything personal against a mod / adm isn't always a nice thing in the public. did you try to pm first?

as we have said before.... if one of your posts is out of line. we're just gonna delete it.

We're not hear to baby-sit and go through every line that might cause problems and we're not gonna send you repeated emails about the same thing.

If you don't want your posts to be deleted like that, then think twice before posting.

We're here to moderate not to babysit.

As I said I wouldn't have minded it being deleted. Instead it was edited with the text replace with "removed."

It made it look like I had changed it when a mod had.

If it were gone it wouldn't have been any big deal. Instead BR thought I wussed out.

I'll concede that it would be nice to leave initials in a thread when we remove content. I think most of us do, but it's something we'll bring up at the next big Admin/Mod Softball game...

This is, in my view, a considerable exaggeration. Was it not only last week that we had a thread appreciating the discussion in AO? Certainly the discussion becomes intense sometimes. Certainly some members, in the heat of the moment, sometimes go too far in their comments. But "gas chamber" and "hell hole"? I don't think so. I appreciate AO as a wide-ranging, intelligent (well, usually) and open forum and I thank all those who contribute to it, including those with whom I disagree.

AppleOutsider is responsible for causing one of our mods to quit, and causing another to damn near have an aneurysm. That forum gets THE MOST complaints and reported posts of any forum here. It's not as bad as Fireside Chat was, but it damn well tries.

It has good months and it has bad months, but it is the breeding ground for the majority of filth and disgust around here. I don't hate AO, and I don't want it to go away... I just wish people would either clean up their acts in there, or people would stop complaining about it all.

If you don't believe the gas chamber reference, ask some of the AO mods here. I'm pretty sure that they would disagree with you...
