problem with actual size of desktop in OSX

I have an iMac G4 15" and the desktop area seems to extend beyond the physical area of the screen.

i.e. if I drag a window to either side of the screen, almost half of it disapears. As if it's mapping it on a non existant second screen.

How do I fix this? How do I limit my desktop area to the physical area of the screen?

Thanks in advance.

Windows can really be dragged just about anywhere you want to put them (with the exception of the top), and thank goodness. Imagine if we were all caged in on just our screen, and we couldn't move anything around.

In other words, this is normal behavior, unless I'm not understanding correctly. Does your mouse go off the screen, too?
