My imac DV 400's hard drive(quantum 13gb) control board popped a circut. I have lost everything on the drive unless I can replace the control board from a drive of the same model. My local mac store (Simutek, TUcson Az.) has been extremely helpful and says that a board swap should work in theory. Has anyone done this someting like this before? Also, anyone with a drive like that let me know, or tell me where to look other than ebay. I have been searching for days and can't find the exact drive. As a last resort, I can send it to a data recovery company, but that will be extremely expensve and I am only on a student budget. Thank you!!

It will be very hard to succeed in what you're trying, even moreso since it's apparently a relatively old drive that is no longer in production. Do you know anyone electrically inclined that might do some miniature welding? Maybe someone at your school/college? I got my iBook's trackpad fixed that way, costing me zilch.

In any case, I remembered and looked up this slashdot story which may or may not give you a smidgeon of hope.

I hope you'll resurrect the beast. (And though I know it's as helpful as bandage on a wooden leg, you just know you should have been backing up on time).

Thanks!! Everybit helps and that link definitely will. any more suggestions or ideas will be helpful. Just so you know, I was installing software for a CD burner so I could start to back everything up, because I could not afford another drive at the moment when she broke on me. Timing, everything is timing!!!
