Why does it take so long to open the Trash?

In OSX, why does it take a few seconds to open the trash can? A regular Finder window comes up instantly, so why doesn't the Trash?

    In Jaguar (10.2.6)? I hadn't noticed.



    A problem like this, and I would run the Disk Utility to Fix Permissions, as the Trash is in a hidden folder within your-specific-user folder in the User folder called .Trash
