I bought a old G4 500Mhz TiPB that was running OS9.2 I used the cd that came with my 12inch PB and loaded 10.2 and it worked fine. I of course bought a legal copy after I made sure the old PB worked.

well, assuming u have a license to run it twice (like, if u bought 2 copies, or remove one copy), then it might be possible. some of the install discs that apple ships with computers check the hardware to make sure it matches what the disc is made for. if that is the case, there are sites on the internet to walk you through "fixing" the disc (requiring that you have cd or dvd burner).

as for formatting, when u startup off the install cd, it will load up an installer program. In the "Installer" menu will be a 'Disk Utility' or similarly named menu item. Click that. Now, select the disk you want to destroy from the left (make sure you have good backups!). On the right, you can partition it (break the disk into several virtual disks, limiting their size), or keep it all on one partition. If you partition, arrange the sizes you want and click partition (note: that button has a message, beyond which you cannot return. make sure u have good backups!). if you don't want to partition your drive, you can just format it (note: format also has a warning, beyond which you can't return).

[I posted this here already. But since you crossposted...]

Yes you can get a working system from another computer. OS X loads libraries as it needs them. They're all there, waiting to be called on. It's completely portable (I could take my powerbook's HD and clone it to my parent's iMac and it would work 100% fine). If you use CCC (http://software.bombich.com/ccc.html), you can get a complete working computer from another computer's set up. It works perfectly.

But, don't forget that you'd be using an illegal copy of OS X because the copy you own is already on another computer.

edit: I forgot to mention ONE little thing about cloning a drive. If the computer your cloning the drive to has a more recent build of OS X on it for compatibility reasons (e.g., the 12" powerbook I've got had a different 10.2.4 build on it than was out in the general public due to compatibility), you're going to run into some trouble. This happens very rarely, so you should be ok. And it doesn't sound like that will be a problem in this case.
