I have 2 copies of Office X. I can't remember which one I installed in my 12inch powerbook. Now I want to install it on my 17PB and I am not sure which one to load? I have both CD's and both keys but not sure which to use. Help!!

I think the lack of posts is because nobody wanted to laugh at you. First, it doesn't matter. Second open word or something do "About Word" or whatever. It will tell you the registered name and license code there.

Except that it does matter. Office v.X will quit if the same license key is being used on your local subnet. There are way around this, but why do that if you've got 2 legal copies?

Microsoft disabled this 'feature' several updates ago as it turned out to be a security hole.

That's just too funny. Thanks for that news, Eugene. It actually made me chuckle...

All I know is that when I tried to run office on two machines on the same network it would shut me out of one. I had two copies so I want to make sure I am legal. Thanks for the support guys I really appreciate the sacastic bullshit for the noobie. And mac users wonder why they are viewed as elitist assholes.

Thanks again for making me feel like a Jack ass.

I was seriously trying to help. I was laughing at more MS ineptitude, not you.

I know that you didn't but lately everything I ask is followed but some snide remark from someone here. I appologize for the anger and language but I am really disappointed.

Don't let ast3r3x scare you... He's harmless. I think people are jealous of your powerbook dilemma, if you ask me. Stick around, you'll like it here (eventually)

You must have mistaken this place for a Mac support group. Go to AppleOutsider for some real love.

No I just thought is was for people that enjoyed using Mac's and wanted to discuss and share issues as well as help each other. i was wrong. I have no problem with flaming someone for making a stupid comment but what did I ask that was so stupid? I have two copies of Office and want to make sure I install the one that is not already in my 12inch PB. I was just curious if there was a way to identify them? Sorry I am so ignorant. Go drink your Latte's and continue to mock those of us that are trying to make the switch and learn a whole new way of computing. Do you catch many colds with your noses in the air like that?

    That is patently funny!

Don't judge all mac users that way though. There are quite a few mac-nazis around, but there are plenty of other people too, enjoying their mac and coming to AppleInsider to ask for or provide help.

I apologize if I was too harsh. Although I did like the Latte and nose joke. I drive a BMW so I know that sterotypes are unfair. Once again I am sorry to those of you that do try to help. For those of you that have nothing nice to say.... Don't burn your nose in your coffee.

Many mac users want to help you, especially admins/mods will love to help you, I just have a faded line between joking and being an ass. My apologies if I caused you any emotional pain...don't sue me

One of the main reasons I thought it was funny is that I don't know how fast your computer is, but on mine it displays that information for a second or two when it starts.

except the "Product ID" listed in the "About" menu, or when the program starts up is not the key you have to enter to register your product.

you have a seperate key, and that generates a product ID.

i just went through this a few days ago.

does anyone actually have an answer for him?

(my solution was not exactly the legal one)

I honestly have no idea where it's stored. I'd imagine its somewhere in the app bundle itself because if you move the Office v.X folder from on computer to another, you don't need to re-enter the cd key. (Not speaking from experience, of course ). So I'm at a loss. I'll poke around a bit and see what I can find.

yeah, i did the samething. just copied from the working one to the other machine, 'cause i didn't have my code on hand.

however, if you have two legit copies and want to install them with different codes, not sure the best way to do it.

you could try installing, use one of your two codes and see what the product ID is. if nothing else, that's a 50-50 chance at getting it right. if it's a different product ID, it's the other code. same ID, same code.

how to do a full uninstall of MS Office v.X

you need to remove the invisible file "/Applications/Microsoft Office X/ Office /OfficePID".

And remove the following preference files from each user's ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft:

    Carbon Registration Database

    Office Registration Cache X

    Microsoft Office Settings (10)

and ready for the new install...
