How do you get applications into the "open with" menu?

How do you stop preview from being the default app. for jpegs and PDFs?

Whenever you come across a document that can be opened with a number of different applications (like a JPG), and you want to change what it's opened with, here's what you do. First, select the file, then hit command-I for Get Info. In the "Open With" section you can use a popup menu to select an application to open the file with, and if you want ALL files of that type to open with that application you just click the "Change All" button. So if you want all JPGs to open with Graphic Converter instead of Preview, just select a JPG, do Get Info, change the application to Graphic Converter, and click Change All. You might have to do this to a few different documents though, because the OS thinks that JPG, JPEG, jpg, and jpeg are all different formats. But generally it shouldn't take long to switch it over.

    You don't.

The first time you run an app, it registers itself with the system as to what types of files it can open.

Then, when you use the Open With... functionality, the list is automagically populated with all the apps, and only the apps, that will open that filetype.

If you're positive that an app will open the filetype you're working with, and it's not on the list, try running the app, then trying it again. If it *still* doesn't work, contact the developer.

This doesn't happen with Macs created disks: the problem disk is a CD, burnt on a PC. Images will only open in the default application and there's nothing in the "open with" menu.

    Any ideas?

Actually, it registers when you open the folder the application is in. For example, if you download a DMG image off the internet containing an application that can open JPEG files, as soon as you double click that disk on your desktop the program will appear in the "Open with..." menu. How cool is that?

The easiest way to change this is by selecting/highlighting your file icon, hold the option key, then go to "File" > "Always Open With". As you see, the default "Open With" selection changes. You can navigate to the appropriate application in the resulting window.
