Looking for a Photo Internship...

As many of you know I am in photo school right now. I have two internship requirements that I have to fulfill. My first I believe I will take with a large studio in my local area. My second I'd like to travel to another market. Anyone know of interesting, original photographers whose site I can check out. I'd love to go over to Europe or just get over to the West Coast or NY. Someplace with a lot more culture than Asheboro, NC. Bleagh... I would prefer someone doing something really far out working on a international level perhaps. I'm surfing the web everyday to find stuff, but if you guys know of some that are astonishing I'd appreciate the heads up.

I would cruise over to the photo.net boards and set up an account. There are surely many people there who can point you in a good direction. Don't know what kind of photography you're into, but if you are interested in Architectural photography, there are many well known photographers in Chicago who may need an assistant.

You may also want to take a look at the book called

    The Photographer's Assistant Handbook

It is loaded with good tips and advice on how to get into this line of work, which if you're talking about an internship, is most likely what you will be doing. Good luck!

Thank You Moogs. I've been on the Photo.net boards and the ASMP site. Not finding what I'm looking for. I'm looking for someone who jars me outta my reality, offends my sensibilities, someone whose work is both stellar in technique, evocative in mood, offensive in subject and beautiful in communication. Someone along the lines of Witkin, Saudek, Beard...

Sure. BTW, I wasn't necessarily saying the people FROM photo.net would be the people you'd work with, so much as they might be able to provide you ideas of who to contact, etc. But I take your point anyway.

If you want to work with what I call the "gritty B&W crowd"... with people who make images that are superb yet not aesthetically beautiful (i.e. harsh subject matter), there are a number of cities you have to research / look at. There are some well-known photographers like that in both New York and Chicago, probably Hollywood too. Anywhere you can find great economic success and cosmopolitan culture -- because there you will also find the fallen stars and those who have been left behind.

Of course, I have no idea what offends your sensibilities and what doesn't. If you're looking for people shooting pictures of guys having sex with a steam cleaner, I can't help you. From my perspective, a good "gritty" photographer takes pictures that shocks sensibilities more than offends them: homeless woman petting a dead cat, war child with bloody stump for an arm, etc. Things that are positively unpleasant to look at, but very important in some respectt.

I don't qualify any of the sexual stuff in that regard because there's often a big social agenda behind it, and sex is really not that important in the face of poverty, war, disease, crime and all the rest. But if that's the kind of stuff you're talking about (erotic stuff), New York or LA is probably the place to go. Chicago is too conservative on the whole.

I guess the point is, you may need to check the yellow pages of the cities where you think you might like to go, find some photographer names that list non-traditional stuff and look them up online. I don't know of any repository of such people or information. You're just going to have to dig it up I think.
