iTunes question: Large library/Small iPod

Posted:
in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
Here's the scenerio...I have over 4600 MP3s in my library and a 20GB iPod. Whenever I add new songs, I have to constantly go through my master list and disable (uncheck) songs that I no longer want to listen to in order to fit the new stuff on the iPod.

Ideally, I want to have all my MP3s enabled (checked) but, still manually fill my iPod with little hastle.

I could choose 'manually manage songs and playlists', but that's really time consuming. Eventually, I'm sure that's what I'll have to do but I was curious if any of you are in a similar situation and how you solved it.

Thanks in advance!

Andd anywhere in the comment field "skip" or another codeword to denote those songs you never want to be added to your iPod but for some reason still want in your computer.

    Make two smart playlists.

Create a playlist called "fixed" that contains all songs that contain the word "fixed" in the comment field.

Then calculate the size of this playlist and subtract that size from the size of your iPod.

Then create a playlist called "random" limited to the remaining size of your iPod that includes only songs that have neither "fixed" or "skip" in the comment field.

As you add songs to the "fixed" playlist, you'll need to reduce the size of your "random" playlist.

If you do this, you'll always have your favorite songs and albums with you, but you'll also have a nice random selection from the rest of your library.

Yes i know this is offtopic. I like your Trash icon. Where'd you get it?

Nice walk-through Tonton. Thanks. I'll bookmark that for next Tuesday when I get my first PB to join my lonely iPod

P.S. (Agiain off topic) Whats your background picture on your TiBook (can you post it please? )

P.P.S Don't you think this would be a great idea for a whole new forum - screenshots of AI users' desktops?

    Thanks for the lengthy example!

I never really explored the smart playlist functions before. I'll give it a shot!
