Locks Permanent & Temporary
I know its "luck of the draw", but it seems a tad unfair to Ai posters to have their topic "locked" ..particularly when others take over the topic and use it to flamebait each other...
So, I was wondering if under the circumstances, rather than putting a permanent "Locked" status on such a Topic...the Admin / Mods might consider instituting a " Cool off " lock of some sort.?
Giving all concerned a 24 hour period before the subject is open for discussion again...
That would seem fairer to those who have legitimate thoughts to contribute as well as giving a chance for the hot heads to cool their heels...
Is this possible....?

Otherwise, the mods would be running around trying to keep up with all the "on hold" threads and so forth. Just lock it and let the chips fall accordingly. If the thread had merit and a good reason to exist, it'll find a life again.

I figure it would just be easier to perhaps start the thread again (if there was a legitimate need/desire to do so), with cooler heads taking over.

Cohiba: mighty fine cigar.
Oops of topic, flame someone, "Bush is an Idiot". Moderator please lock

IIRC, we've tried on more than one occasion.
Couldn't it be just a simple programme sub-routine that you click to lock..as you do now....
but then...tick tock ....tick tock.....it automatically unlocks itself after the prescribed sinbin time has been carried out....
No having to hunker over screen with stop watch in hand....
We do live in the computer age...
Look, to be quite honest, it is increasingly difficult for us to take any complaints about AppleOutsider seriously anymore. You guys either want us to intervene or not intervene when it is most convenient for whomever is complaining. AO is the gas chamber of AppleInsider, and sorry, but we're fresh out of masks for everybody.
As I've said before, if you guys want AO to be a better place, it's really up to you. If we lock a thread that has gone south for a few days, and then unlock it... all of the crap posted to it will still be there; the thread has already been tarnished. Best to just start a new one. But inevitably, almost everything that gets posted into AO gets shit upon.
So as I said, the users need to take a little initiative and responsibility here, because there is little we can do anymore short of tightening the hatches and locking everything that starts to go south.
I am not opposed to the latter idea, by the way.
" Find someone that is willing to make that addition and modify the vBulletin source code."
Didn't know about that.
......" the users need to take a little initiative and responsibility here, because there is little we can do anymore .......
Understood.
LoCash, I think you know my posts well enough to know I try to defuse things with humour..
....but sadly most of the posting that goes around usually happens in the " Northern Hemisphere " after 1AM my local time..& I kinda want to get to bed by that stage...
PS:
I'll be hooking up a gas mask ASAP...
