I know it's not an Apple product, but it's still awesome. Anyone use a Griffin Powermate? Just wanted to know if anyone has found any really useful things to do with it, or secrets, or anything like that. I just think it's really sweet, so I figured I would post about it.

I don't do anything super fancy. Just for zooming in and out in Photoshop and Illustrator ... scrolling in explorer is the only other thing. Pretty cool little thing-ma-jig.

Sorry, but im my opinion, that's the most over priced, useless piece of junk I've seen in a while. I'd rather have a scrollmouse (microsoft mice are programmable the same way the Powermate is), or one of these. The Contour ShuttleExpress is a lot more programmable, has some shortcut keys, and is actually worth something.

But if you want a Powermate because it pulses, go right ahead.

It's useful for keeping unused USB ports in use I suppose.

I saw one in a Mac shop, looked pretty cool, I wouldn't buy it though not enough room on my desk, it would get buried.. I lose my cordless mouse enough.

I used to use one. They used to be able to power the computer on and off. But that changed with the Quicksilver model. No real use for it now! Expensive little toy!

I own a Powermate and use it some of the time to scroll in Safari. I agree, it is over priced and can be a pain getting it to work straight. Looking back, I wouldn't have paid the $45(?) for it now.

I've actually thought of staying with Apple's excellent but limited one button mouse and using the PowerMate as a supplement - I'd keep it to the left of the keyboard and if I ever want to scroll or right-click, I just spin the PowerMate or click it. Not much worse than reaching for the control key. On the other hand, it's a lot of money for such a simple function, and I prefer a multi-button mouse anyway.

i think the word is extravagant, since there really isn't anything like it...

and if you didn't buy it for the pulsing light, then WTF were you buying it for??

    as for uses:

the obvious use is for volume when you're rockin' iTunes...u can go through your playlist w/ the press and turn commands, too..

just reach for the pulsing button...makes it ez to turn off and on w/ o reaching for a mouse or your keyboard

i like to use it to scroll through all my open windows in safari...which will certainly change once panther and expose come out (yknow that'll feel cool going bam! w/ your palm)

how 'bout programming it for the snapback feature....it's all good!

c'mon folks, it reflects poorly if you can't come up with a good use for a programmable button!

I use it for movie editing. Remember the jog wheel on your VCR? Pretty similiar, I can't remember doing editing without it..
