Has anyone gotten Virtual PC to connect to the internet over Ethernet? Maybe it's just a PowerBook 12" problem, but I can't get mine to even after dicking around with the network types and scripts.

Mine didn't work on my 15" PB after the upgrade, which is particularly frustrating because if it can't connect it can't Activate. (The fact that this upgrade has to be reactivated is frustrating enough in itself....)

Yah really? Has anyone gotten VPC to work on Ethernet? This is practically the only reason people use VPC. Arrrgh.

I had used VPC 6.0 on a 12" powerbook over (wired) Ethernet. It worked completely flawlessly. Same with PPP in telephone lines. But this was 6.0...

I've heard that turning off your airport helps this problem. I've not tried it on mine because I don't use that piece o' garbage anymore. But if you gotta, you gotta...

I finally got it working, not sure how. But now there's something worse, when the screen turns off (10 mins) my PowrBook freezes. Nothing can revive it, no series of keystrokes, the screen stays black and there's no hard drive activity no matter what i hit, Force Quit and Return, Cmd Esc and then H to hide VPC or Q and then Return to Quit... That is not good.

Well this is MS we're dealing with. You can expect this things to happen. They've never released anything that's been considered 'stable' in my opinion... I wouldn't worry too much. Why did you want to use the net under VPC anyhow?

I remember having this problem when I had VPC running. Sometimes when I'd quit the program it would do the same thing. One of the reasons I stopped using it. I HATED how it would do that to my computer. Piece of shit program.

I've had no problems with connecting through ethernet to the internet using VPC 6.0 or 6.1 on my 12" Powerbook. It works within the company network and on my wireless network to broadband at home.

I've just gone through the interminable installation of patches and critical updates to Win 2000 and a new one arrives each day ( M$ sigh).

The one that got my goat was to download and install Windows media player to be immeadiatly told on first launch that there was a security issue with it. Now why wasn't the current download ptached instead? (M$ sigh).

Bottom line is Ethernet connection works fine

I think it has something to do with the networking settings. Shared networking versus that other thing. I can't remember. At one point I had it working, but then it stopped and I quit using it and deleted that bastard child of a program from my computer.

Though I too have removed "that bastard child" from my computer as well I remember what the other network setting was called: Virtual Switch.

    Hope that helps...

The key to VPC networking seems to be to use the Virtual Switch. If the Mac can communicate to the real world outside then Virtual Switch will mimic all those contacts.

I've just reread my post and the information on the control panel. The opposite is true. (code for I was wrong!) You need a separate IP address on the VPC compared with the Mac for it to work.

And just to prove it works

I have VPC working half way. I can log in via ethernet at work and I can even use our Windows based VPN to work but I cannot map to our network drives!

I've found that if the Mac's internet sharing is turned on, VPC will not see the network, but if I turn sharing off it works like expected. Give that a shot.
