Is this part of the OS yet, or still some beta download?

Well, up to now it is a beta - downloadable from Apple's ADC Website (Member Page > Download Software > FireWire). Dunno about Panther tho...

It's built into Panther, it list as one of the interfaces when you run ifconfig in the comman line, my guess is that it's gonna be announced when they officialy release it.

it is very built in to panther:

unfortunatly, as i only have one mac with fw, i cant really test it out.

one very interesting thing is that internet connection sharing apparently works over it as well

It could possibly mean "6 to 4 pin Firewire", but why would they have to differentiate? Because 4 pin would always be Windows?

I guess IPv6 to 4... but I dunno why you'd bind a network port to it.

6to4 is a way of using IPv6 even though your ISP doesn't support it.
