As you can tell i am a pC user and am making my switch over to apple as i didnt even know wut their operating system was called.

Anyway, i was gonna make my purchase with the deals given out at macmall but i wouldnt want to buy now when in 4 weeks i can get the newest operating system. is it gonna be worth waiting for? I am unfamiliar with they way Apple does things, so im not sure whether this is an update that can be totally positive. I do know that while i enjoyed Windows 98, i was horrified with Windows Me (millenium) edition and had to deal with it until XP came out. I woudln't have wanted to buy a Pc right before windows XP came out. So at first i was asking if i should buy now or later, and someone told me about Panther. So my question is now with this new OS on the horizon, should i buy now or wait till it comes packaged with the new systems.

Wait until Tuesday. Then we'll all have more information.

    No-one knows for sure now.

apple has promised to release panther by the end of the year. It will be faster and contain more features than the current version of Max OS X, but the current version (10.2) works very well and i havne't had any major problems with it whatsoever.

apple has also been putting free panther update cupons in with new machines. if you can find out if your machine has one of these cupons then u have your bases covered

can someone confirm that apple is indeed including these cupons?

Apple puts in Up To Date coupons in all CPU packages. These are generic and not specifically for any particular OS update. Usually, when you purchase an iMac or G5 during a period prior to the introduction of a new OS such as Panther, you can use the coupon to get an update. I think the Jag update was free if you went to a CompUSA or Apple Store to get a CD/DVD of it. Otherwise you could order for $20 directly from Apple. I think this is how it worked.

    Three things:

    1. Stop posting Panther stuff in Future Hardware...

2...especially when you just started ANOTHER thread about it in General Discussion (and God knows where else).

    3. I don't know. No one does. We've gone over this earlier today and I read everyone's honest answers and they don't seem to have registered.

Seem a little too willfully bent on ignoring already-given answers AND re-asking them again in new threads...in the wrong forum, no less.

Didn't you have ANOTHER Panther thread in Future Hardware earlier today?

I can't help but start to wonder...

If you're not a t****, then please accept my sincere apologies. I'm not trying to be mean. Just pay attention to answers given and where you post things. And no need to post the same thing in multiple forums...pick the one that best fits and do it there. They all get heavy traffic and someone will surely see it and respond.

A troll is a person who posts on a forum to get attention and generally make fun of the people who post there. Many PC users post here to attack Macs and they are really not welcome. You've posted in so many threads on the same subject - the threads indicate what should be posted within, there was a suspicion about you. Also you need to use spell check if you can. If you are a future Mac buyer then welcome.

Don't worry. The Mac OS has a spell check built into the OS so you can correct your spelling even in a browser window like the ones you use to post questions in these forums.

Unfortunately, there are a few self appointed "grammar police" that spend more time worrying about spelling or punctuation than the actual point of a thread.

I think the reason people seem uptight is that recently there have been a lot of posts from trolls.

Most people are usually pretty friendly and helpful though, so don't be put off.

Hey, I SPECIFICALLY said that I was sorry if you weren't a troll and just trying to rattle the cage a bit. I said I wasn't trying to be mean, but the guy below is right...there has been a recent wave of idiot trolls staking claims here, so I might've jumped the gun a bit just because I confused your newness/uncertainty with deliberate troll behavior. I thought I smelled a rat, but it appears I was wrong.

Again, I'm sorry. Welcome to the boards. It is very cool place...with plenty of nice people, myself included.

    IF you're not a troll.

We Apple people are very protective about our machines and any disparaging comments are usually rebuked smartly.

Though you only have to look at Apple Outsider to see that even we can disagree with one another, so imagine how we feel about trolls!

Hopefully you will come in from the cold and see the wonders of Apple, and then maybe in time you too will become a disciple of Jobs, High Lord and Master (kisses picture on mantelpiece and prays to my God Steve!)

    Edited thread title.

I don't think it's too much to ask that you hit a few extra keys to make it legible.
