Power Mac or PowerBook

Should I get the Power Mac G5 (1.6GHz) or the 15" PowerBook (1Ghz SuperDrive)

Will there be a huge difference in speed... the PowerBook would have double the RAM as the Power Mac... I use Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Keynote, Final Cut Express, Soundtrack, all the iApps and stuff like that... right now I am using a iMac G3.

Also is there a big difference between the 1GHz and the 1.25Ghz? Will the 250MHz really give me more?

The better question is do you need portability? Think about it, and you'll have your answer.

I think the G5 will be significantly faster. But you shouldn't stick with the base RAM. Yeah, the PowerBook G4 comes with more than the G5 does, but you should definitely upgrade the RAM in the G5 to bring it to its full potential.

Also, if you end up getting the PowerBook, I think it's worth getting the 1.25 GHz unless you really need to save money. The 1 GHz with all the same stuff as the 1.25 GHz (superdrive, lit keyboard, RAM, hard drive, Airport Extreme) ends up costing only about $50 less. $50 gets you an extra 250 MHz so definitely go for it. If you need to save money though, the stock 1.0 GHz PowerBook G4 is $600 less, so you should get that if you're going to stick with the lesser features.

Well I run a user group and it would be smart to be able to take my computer with me to meetings and events and show a presentations on it rather than carrying around a G5... is the even possible...

I could also use it for school (I am not in college yet though) and It would be really cool to do stuff outside and take it on trips... so I guess yes...

The PowerBook will do everything you need it to (and you will see an advantage going with the 1.25GHz G4) quite well, and it will be portable besides.

I'd only get the G5 if you really need all the speed you can handle, and some more to grow into (although, if you do go this route, you won't see much of that speed until you pump the RAM up).

What about the whole 64-Bit thing... when will applications like Photoshop and Dreamweaver and Final Cut Pro be "optimized for G5" and not usable with older machines or offer a 64-Bit version but a crappy alternative for users with 32-Bit processors... anytime soon... like in the next 4 years?

The situation described won't happen until long after your PowerBook becomes obsolete.

EDIT: And by obsolete, I mean really not very usable anymore. Much like a Wallstreet PowerBook today (which won't be able to boot the latest OS come Panther).

Why is it that PowerBook is one word, while Power Mac is two?

PowerBook unless cost is a major concern and mobility is not.

    Get a DELL

Okay...seriously...it's really depending on whether you like to work at anywhere or just at your home/office.

If you love working during travelling go get a laptop.

If you want performance you must go for tower since PowerBook isn't really a "true workhorse" for "heavy" stuff

    Oh Luca. Your iBook's gone?

Ok, well I have actually decided to go with the G5... Kind of weird but I think I will like it a lot... my problem now is should I get the current Apple Display or wait with the monitor?
