I don't get WEP and Airport?

I just don't get it. We have WEP here at work. I'm trying to connect. Now the only place I see in Apple's system to enter a 128bit hex key is if I choose "other" from the airport menu icon in the top left. Then I can enter in a private network and long ass WEP key. Why does this option show up in this one narrow area? Why can't I find it in the netwok CP or the Internet Connect CP? Seems odd.

So I do that enter network and long ass WEP key, it seems to connect, I have a signal. IP addres from DHCP and all that. Can't ping anything. As far as I can tell I have no DNS. So I try to ping the IP directly. Nothing.

What am I missing here? Why is WEP only used in one small menu and not in the larger CP? After I seem to connect is there something I need to know that can resolve the other issue?

I think you need a 00- in front of your key... I think.

Also, they may be blocking people based on MAC address. WEP just insecurely encrypts data, if you want to stop people from joining the network you have to do some sort of MAC address allowing/blocking.

"00-" huh? Apple's site suggest a "$". That didn't work. The text field for the 128 bit key wouldn't allow a "$" to be typed.

I registered the MAC address, several times, never get a confirmation from the network "support" people. They deny all except registered MACs. I sent them email yesterday to find out the status. Considering I get a signal and an IP I assume they are not blocking me.

After you put in your WEP key, are you logging in using your id/password in this manner: "<username/password>"

be sure to but the < & > at the begginning and end.

Oops. I forgot. This is for using WEP joining CISCO access points. (thats what we use). What kind of wireless hardware are you trying to get a signal from?

    It's working now.

I did too many things at once to know what got it working.

    Updated AirPort software

Updated to latest Mac OS 10.2.whatever

Sent email to network admin about MAC registration.

After that the "other" in the Airport Menu item worked like it's supposed to. Takes about 2 minutes to get online even after you get the signal. After I got a "real" IP address it's working.
