Does it work? Really now can you use normal applications for windows on it? And does it run any where as fast as a normal pc?... I have a new 1.33Ghz powerbook, will it work? I need to run an audio editing program on it.
It works, but it doesn't necessarily interface with all hardware devices. So, if you have a specific audio capture device there's a chance it wouldn't work.
From my experience, Win98SE and earlier are fast enough, but crash prone because the OS is unstable under any circumstances. Win2k and above are slow, but stable.

I wouldn't try to run anything as sensitive as an audio program (latencies and whatnot) through VPC. What program is it? I'm sure that there's better solution available for your new Mac. And the money would be better spent on it.
Any PC software should run in VirtualPC because it is emulating the entire processor and chipset of an x86 computer. However, such emulation in software is *extremely* computationally-intensive.
VirtualPC runs all your programs of one PC in a rooted window that is literally like a separate monitor to the PC. You can drag files from your Mac desktop into it or from it to your desktop. You can have multiple windows open for multiple emulated environments. For example, you could have one running Windows XP, one running Windows 95, one running RedHat Linux, and one running NeXTSTEP all at the same time.
From my experience, though, I'd say that VirtualPC emulates a PC at about 1/4th the speed of your Mac's processor. YMMV, but it's definitely not good enough for something like audio editing where you need an extremely low-latency working environment.
I have always been very happy with VPC. Even complex programs and servers run rather well. Albiet slower....
In any case, if you want a $100 PC, this is your answer. You will get what you pay for. If you want a $500 PC, my advice would be to go get one from Dell or HP etc.
If i can get this to work i can get a new PB--please help
If you are up for the challenge try the following:
I download images from my hospital for preliminary readings, i use a dell and proprietary teleradiology program with dialup to do this(slow). we want to upgrade to a broadband system, emed (a teleradiology company emed.com) has a "web based product" that uses IE to do this. I need to know if using a PB (or upgraded iBook)running virtual pc,IE,and airport BS i can use their site. if the demo works then I will jump for joy and plan on a new PB or upgraded iBook. This is the only reason for me getting VPC i don't plan on running any other windows programs.
for those that have virtual pc and connect through wireless (airport) try this website it's a teleradiology demo for broadband. you need to use IE.
http:/blast.emed.net
login user name speed
password salesdemo
see if you can download/ see the images, and use the menu bar of the demo (ct scans etc.)
the additional issue is whether VPC 6.1 with xp, xp pro, win2k is the way to go, apple discussion boards suggest win2k since it works faster, but you can detune xp to give similar results, but why spend the extra bucks.
thanks for the efforts....let the challenge begin!

I've used VPC on my Ti 500 over AirPort. Normal surfing worked fine, but I can't tell you how the other networking behavior worked out.
have you tested your download speed vpc--ariport, and do you have to change any airport settings??? how do you set up windows to connect to airport???
