Help with Pismo wireless connection

This is somewhat related to another post I just made, but it's different enough to warrant a separate thread.

I am currently using a PowerBook (Pismo, 500MHz, firewire, 1Gig of RAM) for my main home computer. I use a RoadRunner cable modem for my internet connection but I'm currently stuck at my desk when I want to use the internet.

I have the Airport card and the new Airport basestation, but whenever I use the Airport connection, I have to stay in the same room, no more than a few feet away from the basestation! My friend has a PC notebook with wireless and he can surf the web from OUTSIDE his house! I can't even go down the hall.

What can I do to improve my wireless internet connection? I read somewhere in these forums that a few people are using Linksys (spelling?) wireless rounters and PC Card adapters for wireless internet instead of the airport card. Does that improve performance? If so, how do I do that?
