USB 1.1 runs at up to 8mbps, or 1 Megabyte a second. An uncompressed image may take about 1.5-2 megabytes, for comparision. USB 2 runs at up to 480mbps, or 60 megabytes a second. USB 2 tends to not run as fast as FireWire, despite it's rtating (only 50 megabytes/sec.) USB 2 and FireWire are good for devices such as high-end cameras, scanners, videocams, webcams, etc. USB 2 also has other improvements compared to USB 1.1, such as better power management and hot-plugging (plugging in while the computer is on.)

Unlike FireWire, USB 2 is backwards-compatibile with USB 1.1.
