No preorder, just had my name down for a call when they came in. And they are in now! I have until 6 pm PST to pick it up, and I qualify for ed discount. Only thing holding me back is rumors of new monitors and not having Panther included. I don't have an old monitor to use and I'd go crazy with a dualie without a monitor to use it on. Or Can I use it on my TV with RCA inputs? Should I just buy the dang monitor and not worry about new ones coming in?

What do you all think?

Sorry, too excited, I rushed the post....

I have a Dual g5 at my local Apple Store on hold until 6pm. I had my name down on the list for calls when they came in. They said they received 12 today and 3 are left. They said they can hold it until 6pm only becuase I was on the special list.

I'm just not sure about the monitor thing. I've been using a dual USB ibook for the last 2+ years so anything will be better than what I have now. But, I don't want to drop $1100 on a 20 inch display if a new one is supposed to come out real soon. This is my biggest hesitation. I'm also afraid if I let this dualie go, I'll be stuck waiting weeks like everyone else.

get the duallie and ask about 'price protection' on monitors.

if the monitor bezels change to look more "G5'ish" would it matter?

newer res or cheaper due to newer model, ok. hence a q/a about resale/repacking fee on monitor.

AFAIK, the 17 Studio LCD may be on it's way out (not widescreen),

but the recently revamped 20 Cinema should stay a few more cycles,

and the rumoured high-def 30 Cinema would be a surprise... (and $$$)

if there's a bundle on the 20, i'd consider it, if not, iPod.

the G5 has an adapter for VGA, so you could use any old crap monitor,

but you'll have to buy a third party adapter if you want to go to RCA jacks on your TV (where you'll get a headache trying to read fonts designed for 1024x768 on a teevee that barely generates 525 vertical lines).

TV for DVD = good. TV for primary monitor = bad.

enough people are frothing at the bit, you could always eBay the dual G5 or sell it to murbot

    Thanks,

I'm not to concerned about the external appearance. I just don't want a better monitor to come out at a better price point anytime soon. Sounds like the TV idea is out.

    I'll ask about price protection.

Anyone know something about a g5 card that gives you another discount another day? Can I use that discount for the monitor?

Anyone know about any bundles that are worth getting?

    Thanks all for your input.

I ended up getting the dual G5 standard configuration, 20 inch displaly, .Mac renewal, AppleCare for G5 and monitor, and the pro Card. I didn't realize this thing comes with a test drive. I can try it for 30 days and return it if I am not satisified with no restocking fees. All with ed discount. Not bad I guess considering I didn't even preorder.

I don't think the test drive applies to the monitor though.
