Maya performance on dual 2 GHz G5

Got the dual 2 GHz G5 today and managed to get Maya licensed on it before I had to run back to work.

Most of Maya is single-threaded, and for a few of these tasks the machine seemed to run, on average, about 3 times faster than the 800 Mhz Powerbook G4 (DVI) and about 2/3 the speed of a P4 3.2 GHz machine.

For multithreaded tasks like rendering, the G5 should spank the P4 and be comparable with maybe a 2 GHz dual Xeon.

Note that Maya's not G5 optimized in any way at this point.

For more info on the benchmarks (though NOT the raw G5 numbers, as I didn't have time to transcribe them before running back to work -- that will come tonight) check out:

speaking of maya, i have a question.

i ordered my first powerbook(17") and am expecting it early next week. previously i had g4 450 with 15" lcd and g3 500 icebook. i sold both to make room for this powerbook. i just finished bachelor of design in toronto and want to get into computer animation. i don't want to get into hardcore stuff, just enough to model and animate so that i can incorporate into my motion design. and since i'll be travelling alot in the coming year, i decided to get a powerbook instead of a g5. so my question is, is 17" enough to work maya on when i'm abroad without external monitor? i played around with maya on my g4 but i was overwhelmed by the depth of menus and sub menus and sub-sub menus! ideally, i'd get a g5 with dual lcds but that's not my option at the moment. and is the pb powerful enough to handle my workload? like i said, nothing hardcore. i hope to do all my photoshop/illustrator/aftereffects stuff on this machine. i guess it's kinda too late to change my mind but i'd at least like to know what it's like running maya on a pb17 or 15. thanks

Should be no problem! I'm comfortable using Maya on the 15" screen. You will have to get a three-button mouse or a mouse with a scroll wheel, though.
