Permissions Question

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what permissions are in OSX and how they get messed up? I've often found that repairing them fixes quite a few oddities but when I choose to repair permissions with Disk Utility I have no idea what's actually going on!

I was told once that permissions only need fixing when u install software that does something it shouldn't but I've found that even when I make no changes to my mac and I choose to fix permissions I still get the following :

Group differs on ./private/var/run/utmp, should be 0, group is 1

Owner and group corrected on ./private/var/run/utmp

Permissions corrected on ./private/var/run/utmp

2003-09-25 21:25:37 +0100 - The privileges have been repaired on the selected volume.

How is it that this occurs and is it preventable?

thanx
