anyone parallel this experience, where the g5's when put in firewire target mode, the fans turn FULL throttle... its amusing and sounds as if the machine is about ready to take off..

i think any time the machine is on, but the OS hasn't loaded they kick on into full bore mode. they also do this if your machine KP's and you don't reset it. (bad RAM)

also if you boot into safe mode you get the same thing, IIRC.

I ran the hardware test on my bro's G5 and after a few minutes the fans kicked in high gear, then back down, then up again about every 30 seconds. But is was getting a little warm in there.

I'm a werid person with loud noises. I love computers that are really loud, Gives me a sense of Power. I have a old 9600 with 2 10,000RPm drives. It's awesome the sound!

The loud fan noise is expected when that machine isn't fully booted up or running in special modes because the fans and the thermal zones are software controlled. I noticed this too when I wrote my review of the 1.6 model for Computerworld.

I was playing Quake on a very hot day, and my mom commented on how it sounded like my G5 was taxiing, like on an airstrip...but the next day, it wasn't close as loud, because it wasn't as hot outside.
