    Two things:

    * The failed 10.2.8 comes with Safari v85.5, which I call Safari 1.0.1.

    * Mac OS X v10.3 will come with Safari 1.1, according to reports.

Well, actually, I believe the answer was yes.

But when Apple came out with Safari and the WebKit in January '03, the OmniGroup exchanged their own (not yet finished) engine with the WebKit because this was faster to accomplish then writing your own engine. I do not know if they are still working on it.

OmniWeb 4.5 then incorporated these changes and is operating with the same core as Safari. It's still better tough. It really has a big nice list of features.

Defiant's explanation is right. As I recall, the OW5 HTML engine was completely abandoned.

OmniWeb 5 is still in development and, if Michael and Rick and Ken are to be believed, should have a number of new major features including the big one that most people miss: tabs.
