I have an aging Lombard G3 powerbook (USB no firewire), and am getting a new PB. Is there an efficient (ie free) way of transfering my files without buying a USB hard drive?

I seem to remember hearing about a way of connecting two macs via a USB to transfer all of your data. I think it was part of the "Switch to Mac" campaign about a year ago.

Here is the info, which I think could apply to your case even though you're not switching from a PC to a Mac, but from and old Mac to a new Mac.

"Move2Mac includes software for both your PC and Mac, as well as a special USB cable that aids in speeding the data transfer to the correct locations. Move2Mac can transport 500MB of data from your PC to Mac in 15 minutes"

Transfer your files via a USB.

By the way, I highly doubt you'll find any free method for transfering data, but anythings better than buying a USB harddrive!

    Good Luck!

Buy an ethernet crossover cable. Plug one end into the Lombard and the other end into the new PowerBook. Then turn on Personal File Sharing (System Prefs -> Sharing -> Personal File Sharing) and AppleTalk (System Prefs -> Network -> AppleTalk -> Make AppleTalk Active). Then hit command-K on one of the machines and select the other one as a server. Log in as the admin and enter your admin name and password. Then you should be able to access both.

Also, 100 base T ethernet is pretty fast, you should be able to transfer all your files over fairly quickly. It's about 10x as fast as USB. And the only cost involved is the money for the crossover cable (maybe $10).
