Another G5 Rumor to Stoke the Fires
I don't know anyone who works in the computer industry, specifically anything Apple-related, don't know what the hell AltiVec is, and am solely an iMac user. Yet here I am with a G5 rumor. Fate is strange.
I was in line last night to see "Lord of the Rings" for the second time (it transcends the "fantasy" genre, and is easily the best film of the year), and happened to overhear two guys behind me having a conversation about the possibility of "new flat-panel iMacs" debuting at MacWorld. It's not every day you hear this type of conversation, especially while waiting in line for a movie, so, armed with my insider knowledge gleaned from this message board, I turned around and responded that, yes, flat-panel iMacs were expected in January.
One of the guys then mentioned he was a developer (he didn't specify what kind, and the line was beginning to move, so I didn't have time to ask), and the word "G5" slipped out. I looked at him, smiled, and asked if G5s were expected to be unveiled in January. He smiled back with an "oops, I think I said something I shouldn't have" type of look. I then told him I was an iMac user, so I wouldn't really care if G5s were unveiled or not--I'm more interested in the flat-panel. He then admitted that yes, G5s were on the way, January would be "very interesting," and added the comment that it often sucked to be a developer working with prototypes because they are never refined, and they tend to crash a lot.
I have a hard time believing that this person had any reason to make all this up, and I'm certainly not the type to make up silly rumors myself about a computer system I won't even purchase, but I thought those of you anticipating the G5 might appreciate hearing about my experience. This guy also mentioned that Windows XP beat OS X to the punch regarding "surround sound," but the next OS X update would support it. Since I still use 9.1, I have no idea what that means or whether that's true or not, but I thought I'd mention it if it gives more credence to his other statements.
As Jean-Luc Picard would say, "discussion is invited."

While I don't totally discount this... After reading a few of these threads I think you'll find it MUCH easier to believe that people can and do make stuff like this up. I'm no shrink but I think some just like the attention.

I, too, would agree with your skepticism based on what I've read around these parts, but it wasn't like this guy was trying to brag on what he did for the benefit of those around. I merely overheard a conversation and in the process of interjecting my two cents, some information spilled out, clearly unintentionally on his part. That's why it seemed legit to me. But when January rolls around, we'll see if he was full of it or not. I just thought it was worth sharing, though.
But I am skeptical of the developer's knowlege. He may have used a G5 prototype, but that speaks nothing to its release date. Apple certainly has tiers of knowlege: a developer knows more than the masses, but less than the system developers, the system developmers know less than the executives, adn so on. Thus the developer is probably just speculating about the release date, much as we are.

<strong>For whatever reason, I'm not skeptical of what Gandalf said. His story is random enough to be believable.

anybody with a hardware protype knows the release date
If you did meet someone at a movie theatre talking about macs, i think he may have been pulling your chain there, my gullible friend.
<strong>hmm apple engineers leaking info out about upcoming products at lord of the rings to random mac enthusiasts <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> .

He never said anything about them being "Apple" Engineers. Any Engineer that has access to a Prototype G5 would have to most likely work for a Tier 1 ISV.
Take it for what it is worth, but I tend to believe her.
<strong>This one time, at Band Camp, this girl stuck a G5 in her pu$$y and I was like, "is that a G5?" and she was all like, "oops, I wasn't supposed to show that to anyone, but come January all girls will be able to feel the sheer power."

Ahhhhh ... I see there are many levels of enlightenment then ...
... tell me of them.

Something like this could really liven up Steve's Keynote.
"G5 Now with ribbed heat-sink for her pleasure."
I just hope that if the G5 is released this Jan, its the real deal and not some hacked up G4. I also hope it really is 3X more powerful than the P4 at the same clock speed.
And if it is 3X more powerful than the P4 at the same clock speed, I think Apple should tell the world about it. In fact, they should advertise their machines with this monster microprocesser inside, in magazines such as PC Mag and PC World.

...and we can just stop there.

lol good one.
the only thing i believe anymore are actual product advertising promo photography -- it's the only thing that seems legit (such as the leaked photos of kihei imacs, the g4 cube and those crappy photos of the quiksilver enclosure). even then, people with passing knowledge of photoshop can doctor convincing photos together.
so who knows? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
