G5 Booting straight into open firmware and then narcoleptic

Hi - my one week old dual G5 has started doing two bad things:

First off all it boots straight into Open Firmware - necessiting a "mac-boot" command to make it further boot into OSX (supplied 10.2.7 updated via s/w update to 10.2.8)

*then* it will behave ok for 5 minutes or so and go into regular sleep-mode pattern - that's what it seems like, anyhow, it's as if some process is putting the machine to sleep, whether or not I'm typing.

Press a key to wake it, I'll get 30 secs or so of activity and then sleep again. Lots of clicking from the switch on the front panel, also occasional heavy revving of the fans.

All I have other than the standard config is 2 gigs of memory sourced from Crucial which I installed at the time I unwrapped the machine and have shown no obvious problems. Tonight all I have done other than browse the net, respond to mail is to install the iCal update and run it for a minute or so.

Running the Apple Harwdare Test gives nothing away.

I don't know my way around Open Firmware save to boot into OSX from there - is there a source of commands someone can point me at? The reason I ask is because when I press "/" and enter I get a report of a memory error, despite the Hardware Test running OK.

Anyone got any thoughts? I'm trying not to snivel here, going freelance in 3 weeks and love my Shiny Beast...

When it boots into open firmware does it say "DEFAULT CATCH!" at the top?

    Try typing setenv autoboot?=true
