"i" is probably the most popular prefix for software pertaining to macs, and it has even crept over to the PC world and been very popular over there to, the the point where users get frustrated with it just because it is everywhere and they refuse to like it just because it bears the "i" moniker.

definitely this is largely apple's doing, the iMac being such a revolutionary computer, but was it the first "i" product?

iMac and iTools and many other iNames have been used over the years, by various companies for various products or services. Most die out or coexist happily with others due to spelling/capitalization/region variations or significant differences in the products or services that bear the same name.

    Search for any iName here...

Apple may have not been the very first, but it was certainly the first to be popular and widely-recognized. The iMac was certainly the item that jump-started the "revolution" in pop culture and product design with iNames and gaudy translucent white and pastel plastics. It was truly a trendsetter in that aspect.
